“BAGPIPES IN LITHUANIA” – the first Lithuanian book dedicated to this unique instrument and the revival of the bagpiping tradition!

Historical records of bagpipes in Lithuania date back to the 16th century, and it is likely they were played even earlier. The instrument was originally called simply dūda or kūlinė, while the term dūdmaišis (bagpipe) only appeared around the 1970s. The bagpiping tradition of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which had vanished over time, began to be revived in the second half of the 20th century. In Lithuania, this was no easy task: the instrument is rare, extremely delicate and demanding, and strongly linked to mythology.

The book presents insights from Lithuanian and European bagpipers and ethnomusicologists on the history, construction, traditions, making, and playing techniques of the bagpipe—from ancient times to today. It highlights the unique characteristics of bagpipe music in the Baltic region, reveals the secrets of craftsmanship, and shares fascinating stories, legends, and vivid experiences and visions of musicians.

Beginners will find essential practical advice, inspiration, and guidance on exploring the relationship between creativity, authenticity, and innovation. The book also includes bagpipe sheet music.

The author and editor of this ambitious project is Gvidas Kovėra, a longtime promoter of Lithuanian bagpiping, founder of the group Vilko pupos, and an active figure in ethnocultural initiatives. The book was prepared with the help of a dedicated team: ethnologist Dr. Gaila Kirdienė, cultural researcher Kristina Adukaitė, and contributions from masters Markus Raitanen (Finland), Gonçalo Cruz (Portugal), Dzianis Sukhi (Belarus), Žydrius Mukulys (Labanoras bagpiper), and heritage expert Sigutė Mudinienė.
